Effects of phonophoresis with gold nanoparticles on oxidative stress parameters in a traumatic muscle injury model

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of therapeutic pulsed ultrasound with gold nanoparticles on oxidative stress parameters after traumatic muscle injury in Wistar rats. The animals were randomly divided into nine groups (n ¼ 6 each): sham (uninjured muscle); muscle injury without treatment; muscle injury and treatment with dimethyl sulfoxide (15 mg/kg); muscle injury and treatment with gold nanoparticles (27 mg); muscle injury and treatment with dimethyl sulfoxide + gold nanoparticles (Plus); mu… Show more

“…However, in this study, we used a concentration of 70 mg.L -1 , which was shown to be toxic, because the gold levels that accumulate in the organs are proportional to the administered dosage (Lasagna-Reeves et al 2010). Other studies have been conducted using gold nanoparticles for the treatment of certain pathologies in which the NPs were revealed to be non-toxic, likely because they used smaller doses than was used in this current study (Zortea et al 2015;Silveira et al 2014;Dohnert et al 2014;Pereira et al 2012). …”

“…Conversely, anti‐inflammatory and antioxidant effects can be enhanced when the nanoparticles are associated with antioxidant compounds. Our group has demonstrated the therapeutic potential of AuNP isolated or linked to N ‐acetylcysteine (NAC) in experimental models of muscle damage . However, it remains uncertain whether the isolated use of AuNP or the use of AuNP together with compound thiols such as NAC is more effective in acute inflammatory models.…”

“…Ascorbic acid, glutathione and N-acetyl cysteine (a precursor of glutathione) are known antioxidants which have been known in clinical practice. If the glutathione production is genetically suppressed, the genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of AuNPs is reported to be increased (74).…”
