Effects of pH on the electrochemical behaviour of titanium alloys for implant applications

Abstract: The electrochemical behaviour of two commercial titanium alloys Ti-6Al-4 V (ASTM F136) and Ti-13Nb-13Zr (ASTM F1713) was investigated in Ringer physiological solution at two pH values (5.5 and 7.0). The corrosion properties were examined by using electrochemical techniques: Potentiodynamic anodic polarization, cyclic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The electrochemical corrosion properties of both alloys at different conditions were measured in terms of corrosion potential (E (cor… Show more

“…The EIS results obtained in this study were fitted with well-known equivalent circuits [18] using the ZSimpWin software (see Fig 3). The R(QR) circuit (Fig 3a) was used to fit the data obtained for the samples immersed in the sterile medium, and the R(Q(R(QR))) circuit (Fig 3b) was used to fit the data obtained for the alloys exposed to S .…”

“…4,7,15,21,22 This research, according to our knowledge, is the first study that used 2 different pH and dextrose levels simultaneously to observe implant corrosion. The corrosion rate of the implants, which were clearly visible in the SEM images, were significantly higher under conditions with lower pH values and higher dextrose concentrations than in Ringer's solution in our study; this finding fully or partially concurs with the results of earlier studies.…”

“…Ti6Al4V and Ti13Nb13Zr were analyzed in Ringer solution at different pH values by EIS and pontentiodynamic techniques where both alloys presented anodic film with two layers: one compact and the other porous, independent of the pH value 22 . Also EIS diagrams detected a two-layered oxide film comprised of a porous outer layer and a compact inner layer 23 .…”
