Effects of Personal Oral Hygiene and Subgingival Scaling on Bleeding Interdental Gingiva

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of personal oral hygiene and subgingival scaling on bleeding interdental gingiva. The Eastman Interdental Bleeding Index (EIBI) was used to clinically evaluate interdental gingival status. Forty-seven bleeding interdental sites in 47 patients were divided into three groups. Sites in Group I bled on stimulation with wooden interdental cleaners. Groups II and III initially bled but were converted to nonbleeding with oral hygiene alone or oral hygiene combined wi… Show more

“…The aggressive periodontal diseases are clinically heterogeneous and include forms of disease clinically indistinguishable from other forms of periodontitis, and several forms of disease with a uniquely localized clinical presentation with significant destruction at a very early age (Caton et al 1989;Albandar et al 1997). These conditions show remarkable familial aggregation (Schenkein and Van Dyke 1994;Novak and Novak 1996).…”

“…Despite the perceptible advantages of well-stimulated interproximal tissues [6, 7], very few indexes have tried to specifically measure these factors. Our review of the literature found only few indexes created to evaluate papilla inflammation [8–10].…”

“…Patients were evaluated clinically by measuring Plaque index (PI) 29 , Gingival index (GI) 30 , Pocket depth (PD) 31 and Clinical attachment level (CAL) 32 at baseline, then at one, two and three months after the initiation of non surgical periodontal therapy.…”

“…Probing depth (pocket depth) was measured from the gingival margin to the base of the periodontal pocket to the nearest mm (Caton, 1989 Statistical analysis: Data were statistically described in terms of mean and standard deviation (SD), frequency and percentage when appropriate. Data were explored for normality using Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests.…”
