Effects of permethrin exposure on antioxidant enzymes and protein status in Mediterranean clams Ruditapes decussatus

Abstract: The effects of permethrin (PER) on a panel of antoxidant enzymes; superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) and indices of protein oxidation status (carbonylation and free thiols) were determined in digestive gland and gills of the clam Ruditapes decussatus. Animals were exposed to 100 ppb PER for 2 days. These enzyme activities increased significantly in digestive gland (p<0.05) after PER treatment and oxidative modification of proteins was detected in both gill and digest… Show more

“…decussatus (Mediterranean clams), suggesting oxidative stress induced in response to permethrin, a type I pyrethroid insecticide, exposure. Proteasome subunit alpha type‐2 (id: 843) also decreased in protein abundance which agreed with previous work in which proteasome subunit alpha type 2 was significantly altered in male mussel gills exposed to BDE 47, a brominated flame‐retardant. Superoxide dismutase (SOD; id: 1072 and 1212) showed increased protein abundance for both spots.…”

“…7 Despite this apparently paradoxical result, our results are consistent with those observed in several bivalve species exposed to contaminants. 43,44 Oysters exposed to isoproturon 10X showed higher CAT activity than controls. This result agrees well with the fact that the increase in SOD activity in these animals should enhance H 2 O 2 .…”

“…También, es importante tomar en cuenta que la relación detectada entre la temperatura del agua y la respuesta antioxidante en las branquias probablemente esté relacionada con el hecho de que este tejido está en contacto directo con el agua, siendo más sensible a fluctuaciones en parámetros ambientales y más propenso a estrés oxidativo que otros tejidos (85) . sterna en La Marina en las dos épocas de muestreo (verano e invierno) (46) .…”
