Study DesignA prospective cross-sectional study with convenience sampling approach was done to assess quality of life (QoL) in 100 soldiers and veterans affected by spinal cord injury (SCI).PurposeSCI affects almost every aspect of the life of an affected individual. This study was done to measure the impact of SCI on QoL of affected soldiers and veterans using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire.Overview of LiteratureThe devastating effect of SCI on QoL is well known. However, this study is unique in that it includes soldiers and veterans, who constitute a large, but excluded, cohort in most demographic studies.MethodsA cross-sectional study was done at two SCI rehabilitation centres of the Indian armed forces. Data was collected by face-to-face interviews from 100 patients, which included both sociodemographic data as well as all the questions included in WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software.ResultsAge and marital status did not have any influence on QoL. Level of injury (paraplegic or quadriplegic), level of education and presence of other medical co-morbidities had the most significant influence on QoL. Presence of other medical co-morbidities had a negative influence on QoL.ConclusionsIdentification of factors having a positive and negative influence on QoL help in formulating measures and policies that positively influence the QoL following SCI in soldiers. Future longitudinal studies with larger sample sizes and assessment of additional variables in addition to WHOQOL-BREF, like presence/absence of secondary complications, are required to bring about policy changes to provide SCI patients with additional support and increased access to equipment or lifestyle interventions.

A young amateur wrestler presented with a burst fracture of the seventh cervical vertebra with complete paraplegia. He was treated with surgery for spine stabilisation and was actively rehabilitated. Adolescents and teenagers are indulging in high-contact sports like wrestling, without proper training and technical know-how, which can lead to severe injuries and possibly, permanent handicap or death. Trainers, assistants and institutions should be well equipped to diagnose and provide initial care of people with a spinal injury to prevent a partial injury from progressing to complete injury. Athletes, coaches and the public should be aware of methods of first aid and how to transport a patient with a cervical spine injury. Authorities should take steps to improve infrastructures in training institutions and ambulance services. Specialised spinal centres should be established throughout the country for management and rehabilitation of patients with paraplegia.

“…Dados de 2016 da rede Sarah de Hospitais de Reabilitação, com base em pesquisa realizada com 2143 pacientes, também demonstram que a maioria das pessoas atendidas no hospital nesse período relataram uma renda média mensal entre dois e três SM(SARAH, 2016). Estudos brasileiros e internacionais têm demonstrado que após as pessoas serem acometidas pela LM, a renda familiar diminui significativamente e esta diminuição está associada ao fato de que grande parte dessas pessoas contribuía para a renda familiar e a LM limitou o retorno ao trabalho, ocasionando uma queda na renda mensal da família(NOGUEIRA et al, 2016;KALYANI;DASSANAYAKE;SENARATH, 2015). Nesse sentido programas de reabilitação devem considerar e priorizar aquelas atividades que promovam o retorno às atividades laborais, buscando reverter a situação da renda familiar, uma vez que essa se torna menor em um momento crítico de suas vidas, com a LM aumentando as despesas da família no âmbito da saúde.…”
