Effects of paced coital stimulation on estrus duration in intact cycling rats and ovariectomized and ovariectomized-adrenalectomized hormone-primed rats.

Abstract: Feminine sexual behavior was examined in intact cycling rats and ovariectomized and ovariectomized-adrenalectomized hormone-primed rats with the use of a partitioned test cage in which the female controlled the timing of sexual contacts with males. Females received 9 or 10 intromissions in the partitioned test cage (paced) or with the partition removed (nonpaced) or received solitary exposure to the test cage or to mounts without intromission with the use of vaginal masks. Intact cycling (Experiment 1) and gon… Show more

“…This finding is consistent with previous studies suggesting that mating induces estrous abbreviation in female rats (Blandau et al, 1941;Coopersmith et al, 1996;Erskine, 1985;Lodder and Zeilmaker, 1976;Reading and Blaustein, 1984). These findings suggest that two ejaculations are sufficient to induce estrous abbreviation when females are tested repeatedly for estrous termination.…”

“…The temporal pattern of VCS is also important. Intromissions received when the female is allowed to pace the mating sequence are more effective in inducing estrous abbreviation than intromissions received when the male paces mating (Coopersmith, Candurra, and Erskine, 1996;Erskine, 1985).…”

“…Paced mating-Paced mating was utilized over standard mating because of its greater ethological relevance and procedures were carried out as previously reported [40][41][42][43]. Paced mating tests were conducted in a chamber (37.5 cm × 75 cm × 30 cm), which was equally divided by a partition that had a small (5 cm in diameter) hole in the bottom center, to allow a female free access to both sides of the chamber, but which prevented the larger stimulus male from moving between sides.…”

“…Female-typical sexual behaviors were tested using a paced mating protocol (Coopersmith and Erskine, 1994;Erskine, 1985;Paredes and Vazquez, 1999). Paced mating cages were constructed of a 30-in.…”
