Effects of oxytocin in normal man during low and high sodium diets

Abstract: The data reject the hypothesis. In contrast, we found significant antinatriuretic, antikaliuretic and antidiuretic effects, which were not mediated by the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, atrial natriuretic peptide, systemic haemodynamics, or processes increasing urinary excretion of metabolites of nitric oxide. The natriuretic effect of oxytocin found in laboratory animals is species-specific.

“…[17] The expression of oxytocin receptors has been shown not only in the uterine myometrium and mammary glands but also in the endometrium, decidua, ovary, thymus, pancreas, adipocytes, heart kidney, and brain. [18,19] Oxytocin plays a role in successful milk ejection, cardiovascular regulation, analgesic effects, [20] motor activity, [21] thermoregulation, [22] gastric motility, [23] natriuresis, osmoregulation, [24] and sexual behavior. It is well documented that levels of circulating oxytocin increase during sexual stimulation and arousal and peak during orgasm in both men and women.…”

“…The OT receptor antagonist atosiban attenuates the rise in PRA and heart rate in response to hydralazine or diazoxide, without affecting the blood pressure-lowering effect of these two vasodilatators (361). In contrast to these findings, the intravenous infusion of oxytocin decreased urine flow and reduced sodium excretion and PRA in humans (716). The opposite finding in humans may be due to a different expression of the renal OT receptors (35).…”

“…Levels of plasma oxytocin increase slightly in water-restricted states, concomitant with the natriuresis (2). However, oxytocin infusion in humans placed on either a high- or low-salt diet proved incapable of producing natriuresis (57).…”
