Effects of oxygen enriched combustion on pollution and performance characteristics of a diesel engine

Abstract: A B S T R A C TOxygen enriched combustion is one of the attractive combustion technologies to control pollution and improve combustion in diesel engines. An experimental test was conducted on a single cylinder direct injection diesel engine to study the impact of oxygen enrichment on pollution and performance parameters by increasing the oxygen concentration of intake air from 21 to 27% by volume. The tests results show that the combustion process was improved as there is an increase in thermal efficiency of 4… Show more

“…Therefore, CO2 formation is at a high level for carbon-related reactions. When a mixture becomes stoichiometric and rich (1), CO2 formation showed a decreasing trend, while CO increases due to the lack of oxygen for complete combustion [51]. This also causes O, OH, and NO to be reduced in the equilibrium combustion products.…”

“…The fuel composition affects the composition of products due to the different stoichiometric air-fuel ratios and carbon/hydrogen ratios [51,52]. Therefore, Figure 6 shows the products with changes in equivalence ratio for diesel, biodiesel, and their blends.…”

“…Under rich mixture conditions, the carbon monoxide increased markedly when the fraction of carbon dioxide was decreased below 40 %. This resulted from the low burning rate and lower oxygen availability inside the engine cylinder [36]. Figure 4 shows that the major part of the CO concentration is located in the ignition zone on the axis of the cylinder and inside the basin of the piston.…”
