Effects of Orem’s Self-Care Model on the Life Quality of Elderly Patients with Hip Fractures

Abstract: Background. Hip fractures of elderly patients are a public health problem worldwide, mostly lying in bed for a long time; therefore, the importance of life quality in such patients is an issue beyond question. Orem’s self-care model is a nursing pattern which is introduced with the purpose of improving the self-care ability of individuals, especially the patients suffering from diseases with limits on activity. Objective. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of Orem’s self-care program on life qu… Show more

“…The main pathological characteristics of elderly patients undergoing hip replacement are degenerative changes of tissues and organs, reduction or atrophy of body cells, declines of body reserve function and compensatory stress ability, and often accompanied by a variety of underlying factors (such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease, etc.) and decreased tolerance to anesthesia and surgery [11] . Studies have pointed out that the central nervous system and peripheral receptors in elderly patients are reduced and the drug concentration at the receptor site of each target organ is correspondingly signi cantly increased, resulting in a signi cantly enhanced drug effect, and the respiratory and circulatory inhibitory effects of anesthetics in elderly patients are signi cantly stronger than those of young patients and the drug eliminated half-life time is longer in elderly patients [12] , therefore how to choose a reasonable and effective anesthesia regimen for elderly patients with hip replacement has become an urgent problem to be solved in clinical application.…”

“…Third, HBQOL was not significantly different after the intervention in this study. It is known that self-care intervention improves the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with chronic diseases [ 44 , 45 ]. Self-care for managing physical symptoms can lead to an improvement in HRQOL in patients with chronic illnesses [ 46 ].…”
