Effects of oleic acid surface coating on the properties of nickel ferrite nanoparticles/PLA composites

Abstract: Nickel ferrite nanoparticles with or without oleic acid surface coating were mixed with poly(D,L-lactide) (PLA) by double emulsion method. If the nanoparticles were prepared without oleic acid coating, they adsorbed on the PLA surface. If the nanoparticles were coated with oleic acid, they could be readily encapsulated within the PLA microspheres. A slight depression in glass transition temperature was found in all composites and it could be related to the interfacial energies between nanoparticles and PLA. Op… Show more

“…The effect of size and surface charge on various physical properties of MN has been studied, [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] suggesting the requirement of controlling the physical properties for their optimized heating ability in biological systems. The capping agent can be a surfactant [having a long hydrocarbon tail, e.g.…”

“…The variation in lipophilicity would affect the cellular interactions of MN and hence, the net outcome of their therapeutic efficacy. Nickel ferrite MN capped with oleic acid have been prepared 15,16 and studied for physical properties. 19,20 However, there are a few reports 20,21 characterizing MN capped either with OA or PEG.…”

“…It can be explained if a fraction of OA is present at the Ga/PLA surface, either as a free molecule (the FTIR spectrum of Ga/OA NPs points to a possible excess OA) or within Ga/OA NPs at the surfaces that are not fully covered with PLA. Previous investigations have discovered a fraction of OA-coated NPs at the surface in solvent-cast nanocomposite films [ 95 ]. Further and more detailed analyses will be needed to draw firmer conclusions about this topic.…”

“…The adhesion of hybrid polyoxazoline film on the materials was also studied. The value of interfacial energy is an important parameter to determine the adhesion between two components in a composite; it is also a description of the thermodynamic state of the interface [44]. The work of adhesion W 12 measures the attraction between two different phases and W 12 =       for the separation process.…”
