Effects of Ocean Warming on the Underexplored Members of the Coral Microbiome

Abstract: The climate crisis is one of the most significant threats to marine ecosystems. It is leading to severe increases in sea surface temperatures and in the frequency and magnitude of marine heatwaves. These changing conditions are directly impacting coral reef ecosystems, which are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. Coral-associated symbionts are particularly affected because summer heatwaves cause coral bleaching—the loss of endosymbiotic microalgae (Symbiodiniaceae) from coral tissues, leading to co… Show more

“…Finally, while chlamydiae are abundantly found in cnidarian metabarcoding studies, cnidarian samples often contain symbiotic microeukaryotes, such as fungi and protists (e.g. Symbiodiniaceae, Ostreobium , corallicolids, and chromerids) [ 2 , 73 ]. Chlamydiae have been detected in laboratory cultures of both Symbiodiniaceae and Ostreobium [ 19–23 ].…”

“…The coral microbiome is influenced by many factors, including host developmental stage (Sharp et al 2012;Damjanovic et al 2020), spatial scales (e.g., across an individual (Rohwer et al 2002) or geographic regions (Williams et al 2022)), and environmental change (van Oppen and Blackall 2019; Voolstra and Ziegler 2020) -especially thermal stress (reviewed in Maire et al 2022). However, interactions between microbes and other holobiont partners is particularly important for understanding coral resilience.…”

“…Scleractinian corals are foundation members of coral reefs, as their skeleton forms the reefs' three-dimensional structure that provides habitats for many reef-dwelling organisms and because they are the main primary producers on the reef. Corals rely on a wide range of microorganisms for their survival, including protists, bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses (3)(4)(5). Photosynthetic dinoflagellates of the Symbiodiniaceae family are by far the most studied coral-associated microorganisms.…”
