Effects of nutrient enrichment and small predator density on seagrass ecosystems: An experimental assessment

Abstract: We used a field experiment to assess the individual and combined effects of removing top predators and enriching water column nutrients (nitrogen-N and phosphorus-P) on seagrass ecosystem structure and function. Experiments were conducted in turtlegrass (Thalassia testudinum) habitats in St. Joseph Bay, FL, an aquatic preserve in the northern Gulf of Mexico that exhibits low ambient nutrient concentrations and contains abundant populations of small crustacean and gastropod mesograzers. We stocked 7.0 m 2 enclo… Show more

“…All values in the data set were provided as such in the reports. Methods included the dilution technique (Landry and Hassett 1982) and grazer evacuation rates (Kiorbe and Tiselius 1987) for phytoplanktonic communities and herbivore enclosure/exclosures for the rest of communities (Valentine and Heck 1991;Heck et al 2000). Some estimates of herbivory on macroalgae, seagrasses, and mangroves were based on the number and size of herbivore bites imprinted on thalli or leaf blades (Ogden 1990).…”

“…Therefore in comparison to non-restricted bays, Saint Joseph Bay has a relatively low volume exchange and high residence time (Heck et al 2000). The bay also has an abundance of calcifying epiphytes and marine invertebrates (FDEP 2012).…”

“…As many of the marine organisms in Saint Joseph Bay have been observed associated with the seagrass beds (e.g. Valentine and Heck 1993;Heck et al 2000Heck et al , 2003, we chose to collect benthic water samples. Water samples for carbonate chemistry were collected monthly throughout 2012 and daily during the week of 28 July-4 August 2012.…”
