A nursery experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of organic manures on the growth and development of Sterculia setigera (Del.). One hundred and sixty viable seeds were collected from Sterculia setigera tree around Federal College of Wildlife Management Estate, New Bussa, Nigeria. Each soil treatment of 40 kg was thoroughly mixed with 1 kg of each of different organic manure and filled into ten polypots. Ten seeds of S. setigera were sown in each polypot and later thinned to three after sprouting. The experiment was laid in a Completely Randomized Design with four treatments consisting of poultry droppings (T1), cow dung (T2), goat droppings (T3) and top soil only (T4) as control. The experiment was replicated four times. The polypots were watered twice daily and data taken fortnightly for three months. The parameters measured included germination rate, seedling height, number of leaves, and collar girth. Results were analysed using one-way ANOVA. Results showed that the overall performance of S. setigera seedlings were not significantly affected by organic manures at p ≤ 0.05. Soil treated with poultry droppings had highest germination rate (86%) and seedling height of 18.6 cm. Poultry droppings had the highest mean number of leaves (12) and highest mean collar girth of 3 cm with cow dung. Goat droppings and top soil bot had mean value of 2 cm of collar girth. Goat droppings did not perform optimally as it had the lowest mean germination rate (53%) and leaf count (8.4). The use of organic manure to improve growth performance of seedlings should be encouraged though, using poultry and cow-dung for S. setigera may be better than others

Le karité (Vitellaria paradoxa) est un arbre indigène d'Afrique sub-saharienne d'intérêt écologique, alimentaire et économique. L'étude a pour but d'identifier les contraintes qui pèsent sur la domestication du karité au Bénin et d'évaluer l'effet de la provenance des graines et de la fertilisation sur la croissance juvénile des plants de karité. Le karité est vulnérable selon l'UICN et semi-domestiqué compte tenu des contraintes qui entravent sa domestication. Il s'agit entre autre de la lenteur de sa croissance juvénile et la longueur de son cycle végétatif. L'étude menée en pépinière a porté sur la croissance des plantules obtenues des graines issues de deux provenances à savoir Parakou et Banikoara. Ces deux provenances présentent une différence climatique et appartiennent à deux différents parcs à karité-néré du Bénin. Au total quatre traitements (témoin, engrais NPK avec deux doses (10 g/pot/mois, 20 g/pot/mois) et déjection de boeuf) ont été appliqués sur les plantules des deux provenances pour évaluer leurs croissances aériennes. Les résultats issus de cette étude montrent que la provenance n'a pas d'effet sur le diamètre au collet des plantules et sur la longueur des feuilles (P>0,05), mais l'on note une différence significative entre les provenances en ce qui concerne la hauteur et le nombre de feuilles (P<0,05). La fertilisation a un effet significatif sur la croissance des plantules (P<0,05); mais l'impact de l'engrais NPK sur la croissance des plantules de karité n'est pas substantiel.

The importance of Vitellaria paradoxa has necessitated its inclusion in the ongoing afforestation project which requires mass production of its seedlings. The shea-butter tree produces oil-rich seeds that are important to cosmetic and food and nutrition industries. It is a deciduous tree which could survive in the dry-savannah and help withstand desert encroachment. However, overexploitation of its timber for firewood and charcoal production made it vulnerable. In-vitro propagation of this species could be a viable means towards its mass propagation. Two plant-hormones: Gibberellic Acid (GA3) and Benzyl Amino Purine (BAP) were used to grow the plant in different combinations making up six treatments (A-F) with 6 replicates in each group. The combinations include 1.5/0, 1.5/1.0, 1.5/1.5, 2.0/0, 2.0/1.0, 2.0/1.5 mg/L of GA3/BAP, which were used to grow 2cm nodal cuttings of the V. paradoxa on half-strength Murashige and Skoog (MS) media. Treatment F (with 2.0/1.5 mg/L GA3/BAP) produced the highest number of leaves (2.4 ± 0.6, 3.2 ± 0.8) and longest shoot length (1.1 ± 0.3 cm, 1.4 ± 0.5 cm) at 4 and 8 Weeks After Inoculation (WAI), respectively. The results of this study showed that application of growth- enhancing hormones for the regeneration of important tree species could provide means for their mass propagation so as to meet the need for afforestation projects.
