Effects of Nonpharmacological Interventions on Balance Function in Patients with Osteoporosis or Osteopenia: A Network Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Abstract: Objective. To evaluate the clinical efficacy of nonpharmacological interventions in improving balance function of patients with osteoporosis or osteopenia using network meta-analysis (NMA). Methods. We searched seven databases (PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Embase, CKNI, Wanfang Data, VIP, and CBM) for relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) up to August 31, 2020. Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and Time Up and Go Test (TUGT) were used as outcome measures. Two researchers independently screened studies, collecte… Show more

“…At present, many patients and their families have insufficient understanding of osteoporosis and its harmful effects, thinking that it is just a chronic disease with a large number of patients, and it will not have a great impact on their own health, which greatly affects the patient's medication compliance. In addition, patients and their families lack knowledge of medications related to osteoporosis, fear of side effects caused by medications, unclear understanding of cumbersome combination medication methods, excessive cost of medications, or excessive media coverage of related medications, which will also affect the patient's medication compliance [21]. But family-centered education intervention is based on the integration of medical staff, patients, and family members, using family resources to fully mobilize the enthusiasm of patients and family members to strengthen health education for patients and family members.…”

“…As a common orthopedic disorder being highly prevalent among the elderly, in particular, postmenopausal women, osteoporosis (OP) is defined as a systemic skeletal disease resulting from a steady-state metabolic imbalance manifested as excessive bone resorption and/or decreased bone formation during remodelling, which leads to reduction in bone strength, degradation of bone microstructure and increased susceptibility to fracture (Li et al, 2021a;Zhu et al, 2021). Several pharmacological agents such as bisphosphonates and hormone replacement therapy are currently the treatment of choice for OP.…”

“…Several pharmacological agents such as bisphosphonates and hormone replacement therapy are currently the treatment of choice for OP. However, the concerns remain about their efficacy, cost-effectiveness, the potential serious adverse effects on endocrine and cardiovascular systems, as well as the tendency of high-risk groups for noncompliance, which severely limit the clinical use of these therapies (Li et al, 2021a;Zhu et al, 2021). Considering annually increasing incidence of OP with the aging of global population, as well as loss of health, societal social burdens and economic consequences caused by OP, it is necessary to explore new alternative anti-osteoporosis therapies possessing therapeutic efficacy, safety and economy (Zhu et al, 2021).…”
