“…8 This study shows that NIV tolerance was associated with time spent with S pO 2 Ͻ 90% at night while on NIV. Although differences between tolerant and intolerant subjects were not found in the percentage of subjects in whom effective NIV (as defined in methods section) was achieved, for those subjects with low NIV adherence, no improvement in P aO 2 and P aCO 2 was found, and they presented lower P aO 2 after NIV and worse minimum nocturnal S pO 2 and mean nocturnal S pO 2 while using NIV compared with tolerant subjects. In the same way, the percentage of effective NIV in intolerant subjects was the same upon NIV initiation and after 3 months (85.71%); this means that there was no worsening in the effectiveness of ventilation during this 3-month period to which intolerance might otherwise be attributed.…”

“…In a recent study [30], the median tracheostomy-free survival from symptom onset was 28 months in NIV-treated patients, compared to 15 months for untreated patients, and the benefit persisted after adjusting for age, gender, riluzole use and gastrostomy use. However, the only randomized controlled trial of NIV did not support this finding [33].…”

“…1 A large number of observational studies and a small number of randomized trials 2,3 have confirmed the effectiveness of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in these individuals. Improvement in survival, 2,4-9 daytime symptoms of hypoventilation, quality of life, and arterial blood gases have all been documented.…”
