Effects of Network Closure on Cooperative Innovation: Evidence from Dongying’s Petroleum Equipment Industry in China

Abstract: There are two opposing viewpoints on which kind of network configuration provides a more competitive advantage, namely, network closure or structural holes, with the latter occupying the dominant position in the literature. Using social network analysis and negative binomial regression methods, we graph the co-patent network of Dongying's petroleum equipment industry in China and explore its impact on enterprise innovation. The analysis is based on 17 face-to-face interviews, 31 enterprise questionnaires, and … Show more

“…During this period, the government should adjust measures according to the actual situation of different innovative organizations in the network and adopt different methods and policies for different innovative organizations (Ma and Zeng, 2019). Meanwhile, the government can also implement some corresponding economic measures to reward and punish organizations in the network, such as interest rate cuts, subsidies, fines, etc., to encourage various innovative organizations to play a greater role in the network and make the entire network environment more stable.…”

“…In the northern region, Dongying is primarily reliant on the Shengli Oilfield, which stands as China's most significant domestic crude oil source. Since the 1960s, it has progressively developed related industrial clusters [38]. Furthermore, coastal cities such as Yantai, Qingdao, and Rizhao have capitalized on China's reform and opening-up policies, along with the forces of economic globalization.…”

“…Regarding particular research approaches, the assessment system is primarily designed from the viewpoints of innovation components and innovation functions, and the multi-indicator comprehensive evaluation method combined with mathematical models such as factor analysis, entropy method, and regression analysis is used for comprehensive measurement and evaluation. Social network analysis [44], spatial econometric models [45], two-mode network models [46], and exponential random graph models [47] are the most commonly used methods to study the evolution and spatial structure of innovation networks. In general, scientifically identifying the importance and characteristic attributes of urban innovation networks and then analyzing the structure and correlation of innovation networks are important elements of urban innovation network research.…”
