Effects of Near Natural Forest Management on Soil Greenhouse Gas Flux in Pinus massoniana (Lamb.) and Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook. Plantations

Abstract: Greenhouse gases are the main cause of global warming, and forest soil plays an important role in greenhouse gas flux. Near natural forest management is one of the most promising options for improving the function of forests as carbon sinks. However, its effects on greenhouse gas emissions are not yet clear. It is therefore necessary to characterise the effects of near natural forest management on greenhouse gas emissions and soil carbon management in plantation ecosystems. We analysed the influence of near na… Show more

“…Meanwhile, combined with our previous findings [26], it can be inferred that increasing the stability of soil C will further boost this positive correlation. These results indicate that NNFM is a promising way to enhance long-term C sequestration in forest ecosystems.…”

“…The coniferous plantations were improved by planting Q. griffithii and E. fordii in 2008. The detailed management processes for the plantations are described in Table 1 and in our previous work [26]. Presently, the improved plantations are uneven-aged mixed stands with multilayer structures.…”

“…Many plantations have been established and harvested for 2-3 generations. Scientific research has mainly concentrated on mixed forest management, monoculture plantation thinning, close-to-nature forest management, and soil nutrient cycling (Ming et al 2014, Sun et al 2015, Huang et al 2017, Ming et al 2018.…”
