Effects of Native Banana Starch Supplementation on Body Weight and Insulin Sensitivity in Obese Type 2 Diabetics

Abstract: Few fiber supplements have been studied for physiological effectiveness. The effects of native banana starch (NBS) and soy milk (control) on body weight and insulin sensitivity in obese type 2 diabetics were compared using a blind within-subject crossover design. Subjects undertook two phases of 4-week supplementation either with NBS or soy milk. Patients on NBS lost more body weight than when they were on control treatment. Plasma insulin and HOMA-I were reduced after NBS consumption, compared with baseline l… Show more

“…The role of fermentation of dietary fibers in the form of short-chain fatty acids such as acetate, propionate, and butyrate is also to be considered in the amelioration of diabetic status [45]. Recently, it was found that resistant starch from unripe green banana significantly lowered body weight and increased insulin sensitivity in obese type II diabetic subjects [8]. Our results indicated that banana flower and pseudostem are rich in dietary fiber with low glycemic index which could facilitate slow absorption of glucose along the passage through gastro-intestinal tract [49].…”

“…The intakes of tropical fruits have a lot of benefit for health, whereby the fruits possessed antioxidant and antimicrobial properties (Ble-Castillo et al 2010). However, fruits usually have very short shelf-life due to their high sugar and moisture content (Phisut 2012).…”

“…Also, the amount of soy protein or isoflavone levels varied from 0.8 to 50 g and from 32 to 165 mg, respectively. The duration of intervention periods ranged from four weeks [9,10,15] to four years [27]. In the crossover studies, the range of washout period was 0-4 weeks.…”
