Effects of mycoplasma contamination on immunoglobulin biosynthesis by human B lymphoblastoid cell lines

Abstract: The synthesis and secretion of immunoglobulin M (IgM), as well as the relative ratio of membrane and secretory mu heavy chain (mu m and mu s, respectively), were evaluated in mycoplasma-contaminated B lymphoblastoid cell lines. The ratio of mu m to mu s was drastically lowered in infected cultures, and mu s chains could now combine with light chains. A 50 to 100% increase in IgM synthesis occurred in contaminated cultures, and small amounts of IgM were detectable in the culture media. These molecules possessed… Show more

“…On the other hand, mycoplasma has a variety of effects on the immune system, including macrophage activation (11), enhancement of NK activity (6,9,10), an increase in T cell cytotoxicity (1,8,18) or the suppression of cytotoxic response (26), and the enhancement of B cell proliferation and maturation etc. (5,12,27). The proliferative response induced by M. pneumoniae in human lymphoid cell cultures reflects a mitogenic or an antigen-specific T cell response (3,4 species of mycoplasmas were determined by ELI SA.…”

“…However the adverse effects, toxicity, and resistance still bring trouble for pollution abatement [ 10 , 11 , 35 38 ]. Besides, continuous administration of these antibiotics couldn’t completely eliminate mycoplasma for one or even more weeks [ 39 , 40 ]. Therefore, it is critical to find new ways that can eliminate the mycoplasma infection or contamination effectively and timely.…”

“…Mycoplasmas can induce mitogenic effects on T [4] and B lymphocytes [5,6] and thus increase the synthesis of IgM [6,7]. They can also modify the cytotoxic behavior of NK cells [8], CTLs [3] and macrophages [9].…”
