Effects of muscle activity and number of resistance exercise repetitions on perceived exertion in tonic and phasic muscle of young Korean adults

Abstract: [Purpose] The aim of this study was to examine the effects of muscle activity and the number of resistance exercise repetitions on perceived exertion in tonic and phasic muscles in young Korean adults. [Subjects] Janda’s classification system was used to divide 40 Korean males and females in their 20s into a tonic muscle group (10 males, 10 females) and phasic muscle group (10 males, 10 females). [Methods] Each participant performed resistance exercise at 70% of maximum exertion for a single repetition. Muscle… Show more

“…The score of Borg CR-10 after PE and VRE was 3–4, demonstrating moderate exercise effort, whereas that of BE was less than 1, corresponding to very light exertion. The greater score in PE and VRE could be explained by the need for using numerous muscle groups, resulting in increased exertion [ 81 ].…”

“…14 This has been contested by studies of different professional categories with chronic low back pain that have shown that, even under painful conditions, including moderate pain, disability for many is absent or minimal when specific functional assessment instruments are administered. 15 , 16 , 6 …”

“…A Borg 6 scale was also used. This scale measures overall perceived exertion, including shortness of breath or muscle fatigue, and is thus used by millions of researchers and health workers in many countries worldwide.…”

“…Before the EMG electrodes were attached, the skin was swabbed with alcohol-soaked cotton to reduce resistance. An EMG electrode was placed just distal to the knee joint line and 2 cm lateral to the midline, in the direction of the muscle fibers on the dominant leg 9 ) . The maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) was measured to normalize the EMG data.…”
