Effects of Multipurpose, Universal Adhesives on Resin Bonding to Zirconia Ceramic

Abstract: This study evaluated the effects of single-bottle, multipurpose, universal adhesives on the bond strength of resin cement to zirconia ceramic. Polished zirconia ceramic (Cercon base) discs were randomly divided into four groups (n=40) according to the applied surface-conditioning agent: Single Bond 2, Single Bond Universal, All-Bond Universal, and Alloy Primer. Cured composite cylinders (Ø 0.8 mm × 1 mm) were cemented to the conditioned zirconia specimens with resin cement (RelyX ARC). The bonded specimens wer… Show more

“…For zirconia, it is considered that the hydrophilic hydroxyl group moiety in the acidic functional monomer could interact with the hydroxyl groups of zirconium oxide through Van der Waals forces or hydrogen bonds, resulting in good bond strengths 20,21,29) . In this study, the surface treatment agents (PB, SO, CP and SU) containing the phosphate monomer, MDP, exhibited higher bond strengths to the zirconia material, Lava, than UP with Mac-10, which is a carboxylate monomer.…”

“…Silanol groups, which are the hydrolyzed methoxy groups of γ-MPTS, can interact with hydroxyl groups on a silica-based ceramic surface through siloxane bonds, which are further activated in acidic conditions 15,19) . On the other hand, the use of acidic functional monomers, such as MDP can play a beneficial role in bonding to zirconia ceramic due to interaction with the hydroxyl groups on the zirconia surface 20,21) . Therefore, ceramic surface treatment agents generally include γ-MPTS, an acidic functional monomer and solvent (i.e.…”

“…Furthermore, it possesses the ‘ideal’ bonding agent property, that the polar phosphate group of the functional monomer is initially hydrophilic, but MDP becomes more hydrophobic once polymerized 21. Several studies investigated the bond strength of MUAs applied on several materials such as enamel,22 dentin,23 zirconia,2425 and ceramics 1026. The manufacturer of MUAs containing silane proposes improved bonding to glass ceramics or resin composites without additional priming procedures.…”

“…The versatility of universal adhesives provides a new, simplified approach to bonding between resins and ceramics. Some studies have investigated the efficacy of a universal adhesive in bonding resin to zirconia 13) . However, the effectiveness of universal adhesives on lithium disilicate and leucite glass ceramics, or on ceramics with contaminated surfaces, has not been thoroughly investigated.…”
