Effects of multi‐year droughts on fish assemblages of seasonally drying Mediterranean streams

Abstract: 1. This study analysed changes occurring in Mediterranean stream fish assemblages over a sequence of dry years followed by a generally wet period . Variations in assemblage attributes were quantified at the basin and stream reach scales, and related to variables reflecting the occurrence of unusually dry or wet conditions. 2. Assemblage variability increased along with the resolution of analysis, with little changes in species richness, composition and rank abundances, but significant variation in individual s… Show more

“…Accordingly, similar pattern in species diversity was observed. These results are in accordance with numerous previous studies (Godinho et al, 1997(Godinho et al, , 2000Carmona et al, 1999;Pires et al, 1999Pires et al, , 2004Mesquita and Coelho, 2002;Magalhães et al, 2002aMagalhães et al, , 2002bMagalhães et al, , 2007Clavero et al, 2004;Ferreira and Oliveira, 2004;Clavero and Garcia-Berthou, 2006;Mesquita et al, 2006;Ferreira et al, 2007aFerreira et al, , 2007b. “…The failure of rainfall leads to a loss of soil moisture, surface runoff and groundwater recharge. In streams with seasonal drought, the biota appear to be well adapted to this predictable hazard, but if such systems are subject to supra-seasonal drought the biota may suffer losses if not local extinctions (Boulton, 2003;Magalhaes et al, 2007). In the early stages of supra-seasonal drought, temporary water bodies, be they standing water or flowing water, may dry up or become reduced to a series of diminishing pools.…”

“…For this reason, we removed DHS, WAT and ALT as potential predictors. CON and FCV were also highly correlated; we kept FCV as a potential predictive variable because it represents flow variability and it was found important for Mediterranean fish species in several studies (Magalhães et al, 2007;Hermoso and Clavero, 2011) Lastly, FIA and FMA were also correlated; however both of them were used as predictive variables given their similar relevance for Mediterranean fish life cycle (Hermoso and Clavero, 2011). …”
