“…Apparatus and general procedure. The apparatus and procedure for delivering stimuli and recording responses of the nictitating membrane have been described in detail elsewhere (Gormezano, 1966;Gormezano et al, 1983;Schindler et al, 1985). Each rabbit was restrained in a Plexiglas stock, fitted with a headmount, and placed in an individually ventilated and sound-attenuated experimental chamber facing a stimulus panel containing an 11.4 cm speaker located above and directly in front of the animal and two 6 W, 24 V, D.C. houselights, one mounted on each side of the speaker.…”

“…5-HT 1A receptor agonists had no effect or produced a slight retardation of learning (Alhaider et al 1993;Harvey 1996;Welsh et al 1998b). The enhancement of associative learning produced by 5-HT 2 agonists was found in varying situations to be accompanied by an increase in the amplitude of the unconditioned response (Schindler et al 1985;Harvey et al 1988;Romano et al 1991;Harvey 1993, 1994). More recently, we found that the 5-HT 2 antagonists ritanserin and MDL-11,939 produced a retardation of learning and a decrease in the amplitude of the unconditioned response, effects that were opposite to those of the 5-HT 2 agonists, while another 5-HT 2 antagonist, LY-53,857, had no effect on either measure (Welsh et al 1998a).…”

“…Pentazocine is a mixed action opioid, having agonist actions at both sigma and kappa receptors and agonist/antagonist actions at the mu receptor. The procedure used in this experiment was similar to that used in previous studies of opioid effects on classical conditioning in the rabbit [Schindler et al, 1983. Briefly, the offset of a tone CS (200-ms, 90-db, 1-KHz) was paired with the onset of a paraorbital shock US (100-ms, 60-Hz).…”
