Effects of Modulation Index on Harmonics of SP-PWM Inverter Supplying Universal Motor

Abstract: Abstract-This manuscript presents the effects of changing modulation indices on current and voltage harmonics of universal motor when it is supplied by single phase PWM (SP-PWM) inverter, the effect has been analyzed with simulation and experimental setup. For variable speed applications universal motor can be controlled either by phase angle control drive or by SP-PWM inverter drive. SP-PWM inverter-fed drive is common technique that is used to adjust the voltage applied to motor, so that variable speed can b… Show more

“…For instance, with an amplitude modulation index of 1.4, the THD values were observed to be 27.06% in the current waveform and 27.08% in the voltage waveform [21]. Similarly, investigations involving three modulation index values (0.6, 0.9, and 1) revealed that the minimum THD value for both current and voltage waves aligns with a modulation index value of 1 [24]. These results underscore the importance of the amplitude modulation index in controlling THD in MMCs and provide valuable insights for optimizing their performance.…”

“…Various control techniques are available for MMCs, with pulse width modulation (PWM) technology being one of the most prevalent choices. PWM technology is favored for its ability to regulate the voltages of sub-module (SM) capacitors, thereby ensuring the generation of high-quality output signals [24]. Among PWM-based control techniques, the amplitude modulation index emerges as a pivotal parameter.…”

“…To turn on these devices, proper triggering pulses are essential. The duration of these pulses depends on the switching frequency and its modulation index (MI) [2][3][4][5][6][7]. MI selection becomes important provided the switching frequency is constant.…”

“…The power quality of electrical signals must be good to transfer from the load function with proper waveforms, magnitudes, and distortions. Therefore, power quality is an extremely important aspect of distribution systems that enables all equipment to operate in healthy condition [10][11][12][13]. Equipment malfunctioning will occur when these conditions are unsatisfied.…”
