Effects of Moderate Noise on a Limit Cycle Oscillator: Counterrotation and Bistability

Abstract: The effects of noise on the dynamics of nonlinear systems is known to lead to many counterintuitive behaviors. Using simple planar limit cycle oscillators, we show that the addition of moderate noise leads to qualitatively different dynamics. In particular, the system can appear bistable, rotate in the opposite direction of the deterministic limit cycle, or cease oscillating altogether. Utilizing standard techniques from stochastic calculus and recently developed stochastic phase reduction methods, we elucidat… Show more

“…However, effective numerical methods to solve such high dimensional Fokker-Planck equations in the large unbounded domain are still under development [2]. Instead, in this section, we generate the most probable phase portrait by sample-wise simulation (often called Monte-Carlo simulation) for the following Duffing oscillator with harmonic excitation and multiplicative noise [12,15] dx = ydt, dy = (γ 1 cos(wt) + a 1 x − a 2 y − a 3 x 3 )dt + γ 2 xdB t .…”

“…Physically co-and counter rotating oscillators exist in coupled spherical pendulums, where energy fluctuations in counter-rotating pendulums are found to be higher than in co-rotating case [15]. Recently counter-rotating oscillators are observed in limit cycle oscillator under addition of moderate noise [16]. The sense of a direction in the rotation of a trajectory of a dynamical system was first introduced by Tabor [17] which was elaborated further by Prasad [14].…”
