EFFECTS OF MIXED ORGANIC AND INORGANIC FERTILIZERS APPLICATION ON SOIL PROPERTIES AND THE GROWTH OF KENAF (<i>HIBISCUS CANNABINUS</i> L.) CULTIVATED ON BRIS SOILS

Abstract: The demand for kenaf in the world increases rapidly by the years. Cultivation of the crop in Malaysia is a challenging task, especially when kenaf is grown on sandy soils with low fertility, such as the BRIS Soils (Beach Ridges Interspersed with Swales). A pot study was conducted in a glasshouse at Universiti Putra Malaysia to evaluate the potential of inorganic and organic fertilizers or their combination for growing kenaf on very sandy BRIS Soils, using variety V36. There were altogether sixteen treatments: … Show more

“…Application of biochar alone on BRIS soil might not have resulted in the best growth performance of kenaf. However, biochar must be combined with NPK fertiliser and zeolite to obtain the highest plant growth performance (Basri et al, 2013;Shi et al, 2019). Incorporation of biochar derived from burn rice husk into soil media improved available nutrient since rice husk biochar contain a high nutrient concentration of P, Na, Ca, and Mg (Cho et al, 2017).…”

“…Pertambahan diameter batang makin besar dengan bertambahnya dosis kompos TKKS maupun pupuk anorganik. Basri et al (2013) menyatakan bahwa diameter batang kenaf secara signifikan bervariasi pada perlakuan kombinasi dosis pupuk organik dan pupuk anorganik. Kombinasi pupuk organik dan anorganik menghasilkan diameter batang yang lebih besar dibandingkan dengan aplikasi pupuk tunggal.…”

“…Before planting, submersion of the cultivated soil could decrease residual pesticides in the ground (Ogolla et al, 2016). In addition, the soil conditioner materials improve the characteristics of the soil physically, chemically, and biologically and reduce the soil degradation resulting from the use of fertilizers and pesticides irrationally (Akbar Basri et al, 2013;Jemal & Abebe, 2016).…”
