Effects of misalignment and crowning on contact characteristics of crown gear coupling

Abstract: Although crown gear couplings are widely used in rotating machinery, very little is known about their contact behavior and load distribution characteristics. In this study, the manufacturing methods are presented for crown gear coupling. Complete geometrical mathematical models from tools to crown gear coupling are proposed based on the theories of differential geometry and gear mesh. Then, a high-fidelity finite element model verified by tooth contact analysis under light load is employed to investigate load … Show more

“…3,4 Gear couplings are used to meet the misalignment compensation capacity by weakening the load-carrying property, especially under the effect of misalignment, the mechanical properties of the tooth surface are very poor, and wear performance and load-carrying capacity decreases with the increase of misalignment angle. 5 The contact and load distribution of tooth have always been favored by researchers. 6 As early as the 1960s, Renzo et al 7 carried out a study on the contact characteristics of tooth pairs and proposed the problem of uneven distribution of the load of gear couplings in the case of equiaxial misalignment.…”
