Effects of Mindfulness Practice on Performance and Factors Related to Performance in Long-Distance Running: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Fatigue, boredom, pain, performance anxiety, and negative thoughts are challenges characteristic of competitive running. One psychological technique that is gaining support and has been successfully implemented in sport is the practice of mindfulness. Where conventional psychological skills training interventions aim to change dysfunctional thoughts and emotions, mindfulness focuses on altering the relationship to physiological and psychological states. “…Previous reviews of MBPs in sport have reported reduced stress, [71] burnout, [72] and improvements in performance in mixed-level athletes, [23,73,74] and have criticised the quality of evidence from studies with low methodological rigour. [71][72][73].…”

“…Mindfulness meditation is a form of mental training involving bouts of enhanced attention regulation to present-moment experiences with an attitude of acceptance and non-judgment (Kabat-Zinn, 1990 ). Mindfulness training has become an increasingly popular tool within elite sporting settings (Gross, 2020 ) due to evidence for meditation-related enhancement of a range of psychological, physiological, and cognitive factors underpinning performance (Pineau et al, 2014 ; Bühlmayer et al, 2017 ; Josefsson et al, 2019 ; Noetel et al, 2019 ; Corbally et al, 2020 ). Whilst most existing meditation research among athletes has investigated meditation-related performance benefits following prolonged periods of resource and time-intensive meditation training (Gross, 2020 ), an alternative line of research in non-athlete populations has begun to investigate whether attention and performance can be augmented through single bouts of meditation that immediately precede task completion (Leyland et al, 2019 ).…”

“…The athlete leans forward slightly at the fastest time. 10 At the start, athletes need to control their center of gravity precisely, and the core muscles are responsible for maintaining balance and stability of the body. Athletes need to work with the large muscle groups in the core to adjust their center of gravity.…”
