The NH3-SCR performance in the presence of short and long chain hydrocarbons (propylene and dodecane) as well as of formaldehyde was investigated for a series of V2O5-MoO3/TiO2 (VMoTi) and V2O5-WO3/TiO2 (VWTi) catalysts. The results demonstrate that vanadium oxides act as the main catalytically active component for NOx conversion, hydrocarbon (HC) and formaldehyde oxidation. Among VMoTi and VWTi materials with different vanadium loading, the catalysts containing 3 wt.% V2O5 lead to the highest catalytic activity. The ability to simultaneously remove NOx, HC and HCHO over VMoTi is inferior to that of the conventional WO3-based catalyst. However, VMoTi exhibits higher CO2 selectivity, especially during oxidation of long-chain HCs, which represents an important advantage for a possible multifunctional catalyst. Apart from CO, formaldehyde was detected as byproduct during HC oxidation for both catalyst formulations.

A new honeycomb production process was proposed with both filter cake (from hydrothermal treatment of metatitanic acid) and industrial titanium dioxide as Ti sources. The strength of the obtained pilot product was comparable with the current industrial honeycomb product from only filter cake, but its denitration (DeNOx) efficiency was elevated up to 15 percentage points. Multiple characterizations revealed the filter cake and industrial titanium dioxide to be composed of primary particles and secondary particles, respectively, and the introduced secondary particles from industrial titanium dioxide resulted in increased specific surface area and pore size/volume, facilitating the exposure of more active sites with improved activity. Moreover, a positive correlation property was found between the honeycomb strength and crystallinity for the samples from different titanium sources. The filter cake with rich hydroxyl groups and weak crystallinity could be fused more easily among these primary particles to have a higher strength than industrial titanium dioxide, and the primary particle of the filter cake could fill the pile pore of industrial titanium dioxide and act as a solid phase binder to acquire good strength for the honeycomb using both the filter cake and titanium dioxide as Ti sources. The improved honeycomb product with good activity and strength may have more widespread application for the purification of low temperature flue gas in industry.

Titanium modified FeMgOx catalysts with different precursors were prepared by coprecipitation method with microwave thermal treatment. The iron precursor is a key factor affecting the surface active component. The catalyst using FeSO4 and Mg(NO3)2 as precursors exhibited enhanced catalytic activity from 225 to 400 °C, with a maximum NOx conversion of 100%. Iron oxides existed as γ-Fe2O3 in this catalyst. They exhibited highly enriched surface active oxygen and surface acidity, which were favorable for low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reaction. Besides, it showed advantage in surface area, spherical particle distribution and pores connectivity. Amorphous iron-magnesium-titanium mixed oxides were the main phase of the catalysts using Fe(NO3)3 as a precursor. This catalyst exhibited a narrow T90 of 200/250–350 °C. Side reactions occurred after 300 °C producing NOx, which reduced the NOx conversion. The strong acid sites inhibited the side reactions, and thus improved the catalytic performance above 300 °C. The weak acid sites appeared below 200 °C, and had a great impact on the low-temperature catalytic performance. Nevertheless, amorphous iron-magnesium-titanium mixed oxides blocked the absorption and activation between NH3 and the surface strong acid sites, which was strengthened on the γ-Fe2O3 surface.
