Effects of Meteorological Factors on the Expression of Nesting Behaviour in the Sulawesi Babirusa (<i>Babyrousa celebensis</i>)

Abstract: The impact of environmental stimuli on the expression of nesting behaviour of Sulawesi babirusa (Babyrousa celebensis) was explored over a period of 1339 days from 01 st August 2006 until 31 st March 2010 in a large animal enclosure on Bali, Indonesia. We found that nest building behaviour and the re-use of sleeping nests occurred more frequently in the dry season than the wet season and was clearly influenced by both a drop in the ambient temperature and an increase in wind speed. Additionally, net effective … Show more

“…The coconut palms at Babirusa Park began flowering in April 2006. However, a heavy storm at the end of 2006 damaged the plants in the study area [18,19]. Such an external factor seemed to diminish the reproductive function of the coconut palms in 2007 (Fig.…”

“…1). The farmers have come into conflict with Togian babirusas because some of the animals' home ranges overlap with agricultural areas, in particular, vegetable gardens [11][12][13]. The babirusas have often been seen in coconut groves [12,14].…”

“…In the much larger babirusa ( Babyrousa celebensis , Suidae), both sexes constructed nests using plant material available in their enclosures [120]. These structures were used for sleeping and were more common in the dry season than the wet season [121]. Increased nest construction was considered a response to decreased ambient temperature and increased wind speed, so the nest was thought to impart some thermal benefit to the individuals [121], although this was not measured.…”

“…celebensis), 13 and 14 years of age at the onset of observations, were observed in this study. Both animals had been familiar with coconut palm trees and their fruits since they were one year old (Ito et al 2019a(Ito et al , 2019b(Ito et al , 2020. They were kept in a 100 m 2 enclosure with a ground surface of hard soil and gravel.…”
