Effects of meloxicam on hematologic and plasma biochemical analysis variables and results of histologic examination of tissue specimens of Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica)

Abstract: Meloxicam (2.0 mg/kg, IM, q 12 h for 14 days) did not cause substantial alterations in function of or histopathologic findings for the kidneys of Japanese quail but did induce muscle necrosis; repeated IM administration of meloxicam to quail may be contraindicated.

“…Although the intestinal histology of Japanese quail has been used as an investigation method in numerous experiments ( Berg et al., 2001 , Grote et al., 2008 , He et al., 2014 , Rodler and Sinowatz, 2013 , Sinclair et al., 2012 , Simova-Curd et al., 2013 ), there are very few references pertaining to the general histological features of the healthy Japanese quail intestinal tract. The only comprehensive information can be found in a book by Theodore C. Fitzgerald which contains comprehensively illustrated hand drawn histological images with explanation of features.…”

“…12 Such results have caused numerous authors to emphasize the need for species-specific pharmacokinetic analyses before administering meloxicam to any bird. Additional concerns when giving an NSAID include the potential for renal damage, as reflected in uric acid levels and kidney histology, 16,17 and for gastrointestinal effects; with intramuscular administration, another potential sequela is necrosis at the injection site. As is often the case in laboratory animal medicine, giving meloxicam to zebra finches constitutes an extralabel use.We performed a study using healthy, adult zebra finches that entailed the administration of 1 or 2 mg/kg meloxicam intramuscularly to help elucidate an optimal dosing regimen, as well as to reveal any evidence of toxicity.…”
