Effects of melatonin and acetylsalicylic acid against hepatic oxidative stress after bile duct ligation in rat

Abstract: CAT activity and MEL level decreased in the liver tissues of rats with BDL after administration of either melatonin alone or with ASA. However, melatonin and ASA administration increases liver tissue GSH levels in BDL ligated rats

“…In addition, enhancement of oxidative stress has been implicated in DMN-induced fibrosis [29]. Indeed, it has been reported that melatonin enhances antioxidant enzymes such as GPx, GST, CAT, and SOD in ischemia/reperfusion-induced cardiac injury and endosulfan-induced oxidative tissue damage, and bile duct ligation-induced hepatic oxidative stress in rats [30][31][32]. In agreement, we observed that melatonin decreased severe hepatocyte necrosis (Fig.…”

“…Recently, increasing evidence support the protective role of melatonin against oxidative injury in cholestasis [31,32] and melatonin works via eliminating the oxidants [24]. In line with our previous report, melatonin partially restored liver function in BDL rats [4,25].…”

“…Posmyk et al [35] also reported that the application of melatonin lowered lipid peroxidation of cucumber seeds during chilling stress. It appears that because of its lipophilic nature and antioxidant properties, melatonin protects lipids against peroxidation [43,44].…”
