Quality of life, comfort, and wellbeing during pregnancy are essential for every country in the world. Pregnancy is considered a preparation period for becoming a mother. Maternal role development, including confidence and satisfaction as a mother, is important in the transition to motherhood. Negative psychosocial affect, such as increased anxiety and distress, during pregnancy adversely influences the childbirth experience and childcare, which contributes to postpartum depression. However, the impact of positive feelings on the maternal role development remains unclear. Therefore, the study purpose was to clarify the relationship between comfort in late pregnancy and maternal role attainment and childcare during early postpartum. We designed a descriptive, longitudinal, correlational study by using the Prenatal Comfort Scale, the Postpartum Maternal Role Confidence Scale, and the Postpartum Maternal Satisfaction Scale. Among 339 participants who had received care at a university hospital located in Sendai city in Japan, 215 subjects completed the longitudinal study by answering a questionnaire for the respective Scale late in their pregnancy or during early postpartum. The subjects consisted of 114 primipara (32.0 ± 5.4 years) and 101 multipara (33.4 ± 4.9 years). In primipara, comfort with motherhood was significantly correlated with maternal confidence regarding knowledge and childcare skills and maternal satisfaction. In multipara, comfort in late pregnancy was related to maternal confidence and satisfaction. Positive affect was related to maternal confidence and maternal satisfaction in early postpartum. Therefore, a prenatal nursing intervention helps women become more comfortable with impending motherhood, thereby promoting maternal role attainment after delivery.

Parent education traditionally focuses on childbirth, whereas the perinatal period gets little attention despite parents' reports of feeling unprepared. Lack of education surrounding newborn behavior leads to decreased maternal confidence and ineffective responsiveness to infant cues for feeding, crying, and sleep. This can cause overfeeding, lowered breastfeeding success, and contributes to parental stress which can impact maternal-infant bonding. Maternal role is dependent on the mother's own experience of the interactions between herself and her infant and the care that she perceives she can give, reflected in her level of confidence (Liu et al., 2012). Maternal confidence is correlated to maternal transition as she goes through the process toward maternal role attainment (Mercer, 2006). One qualitative study found the following themes surrounding the needs of postpartum women: The postpartum period is a time of upheaval, it is a time not well prepared for, it involves seeking a new social network and sense of self, support around breastfeeding is frequently desired, insecurity around caring for the infant is often felt, and the redesign of postpartum services is needed (Foley, 2012). Health professionals have traditionally had a greater focus on care tasks and have not met the wider needs of women as they transition into their new maternal role identity (Sporek, 2014). Transition to motherhood after childbirth is known to be a tumultuous time in a woman's life. There are physical, psychological, and social changes, along with an emotional process, as women struggle to meet cultural and personal role expectations.

Esta investigação tem como objetivo verificar o conhecimento popular e o conhecimento científico das mães de bebês com icterícia em tratamento com fototerapia. Tratou-se de uma pesquisa de campo, com observação direta e abordagem qualitativa, baseada no Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo (DSC), realizada em meados de 2011. A pesquisa foi realizada em uma maternidade estadual na cidade de Mafra em Santa Catarina, com mães de bebês em fototerapia para o tratamento da icterícia. Evidenciaram-se 7 ideias centrais e 11 DSCs. Os resultados revelaram que as mães entrevistadas não reconheceram a icterícia neonatal como um agravo, assim como a fototerapia como medida de tratamento. Evidenciou-se que as mães trazem consigo crenças e conhecimentos populares sobre a icterícia, os quais precisam ser respeitados e valorizados para o fortalecimento do vínculo e do cuidado.
