In this review, massage therapy has been shown to have beneficial effects on varying conditions including prenatal depression, preterm infants, full-term infants, autism, skin conditions, pain syndromes including arthritis and fibromyalgia, hypertension, autoimmune conditions including asthma and multiple sclerosis, immune conditions including HIV and breast cancer and aging problems including Parkinson's and dementia. Although many of the studies have involved comparisons between massage therapy and standard treatment control groups, several have compared different forms of massage (e.g. Swedish versus Thai massage), and different active therapies such as massage versus exercise. Typically, the massage therapy groups have experienced more positive effects than the control or comparison groups. This may relate to the massage therapy providing more stimulation of pressure receptors, in turn enhancing vagal activity and reducing Cortisol levels. Some of the researchers have assessed physical, physiological and biochemical effects, although most have relied exclusively on self-report measures. Despite these methodological problems and the dearth of research from the U.S., the massage therapy profession has grown significantly and massage therapy is increasingly practiced in traditional medical settings, highlighting the need for more rigorous research.

Context: Labor is among the most painful events in females' lives. Labor pain (LP) is alleviated using both pharmacological and non -pharmacological methods. The current study aimed at reviewing clinical trials in Iran as well as other countries on the effects of acupressure, aromatherapy, and massage therapy on LP.Evidence Acquisition: In the current review study, online databases such as SID, Iranmedex, Magiran, IranDoc, Cochrane library, PubMed, and Google Scholar were searched to retrieve studies published before 2017 in Persian or English language. Search keywords were labor pain, acupressure, aromatherapy, and massage as well as their Persian equivalents. Retrieved clinical trials were appraised using the Jadad checklist. Data were analyzed qualitatively. Results:In total, 46 clinical trials were enrolled. Most studies reported the positive effects of acupressure, aromatherapy, and massage therapy on labor pain. The most frequently used therapies were aromatherapy with lavender essential oil and acupressure on the LI4 and SP6 points.Conclusions: Acupressure, aromatherapy, and massage therapy were effective in alleviating labor pain. These techniques are mostly safe without serious side effects for parturient females and their babies. Therefore, they can be used to alleviate labor pain.

ÖZDoğum eylemindeki ağrı, bugün bilinen ve tanımlanan en şiddetli ağrı kaynaklarından biridir. Doğum ağrısını hafifletmek ve gebenin ağrıyla baş etmesini kolaylaştırmak için kullanılan farmakolojik ve nonfarmakolojik yöntemler vardır. Masaj, bu yöntemlerden en eski ve yan etkisi en az olan nonfarmakolojik yöntemlerden biridir. Masaj kan, lenfatik dolaşım ve endorfin salınımını artırarak, ağrı, inflamasyon ve ödemi azaltmakta, depresyon ve anksiyeteye iyi gelmektedir. Bu derlemenin amacı; doğum ağrısı sırasında masajın gebeye fizyolojik ve psikolojik etkilerini araştıran literatür bulgularını incelemektir. ABSTRACTLabor pain is one of the most severe pains known. Pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods exist in order to relieve labor pain and to help the pregnant women deal with it. Massage is one of the earliest non-pharmacological methods and has very few side effects. Massage alleviates pain, reduces inflammation and edema has and has beneficial effects on depression and anxiety by increasing blood and lymphatic circulation and stimulating the production of endorphins. The aim of this review is to assess the literature findings on the physiological and psychological effects of massage as applied to pregnant women during labor.

Abstract: Findings suggest that massage is an effective alternative intervention, decreasing pain and anxiety during labor and increasing the level of satisfaction. Also, the supportive role of presenting an attendant can positively influence the level of anxiety and satisfaction.
