There has been growing awareness and demand for construction enterprises transition towards sustainability with an aim to maximize the economic, social and environmental values of construction. This presents a significant challenge to both policy makers and industry practitioners as sustainability is such a complex concept that includes various aspects whereas construction firms are usually resource constrained. There is lack of studies classifying various aspects of sustainability according to their managerial priorities, thereby identifying the efficient transition pathways towards higher sustainability levels for construction enterprises. This paper proposes Transition Pathways towards Sustainability (TPS) for the construction enterprises by conducting an importance-performance analysis of the critical sustainability aspects. The construction enterprises were firstly classified into different clusters based on their sustainability performance by means of cluster analysis. Consequently, the importance-performance analysis was employed to classify the various sustainability aspects of the identified firm clusters, followed by the development of the TPS. The results show that although there is general agreement on the high importance of economic sustainability aspects, significant differences exist in the perceptions and performance of social and environmental sustainability aspects across firm groups. Therefore, there are considerably different transition pathways for the various firm groups towards higher sustainability levels. This research provides a useful reference for construction enterprises to evaluate their positions in the sustainability transition journey and to optimize their resource allocation for sustainable development.

Organization performance is becoming ever more dependent on employee loyalty in the international construction projects. However, the improvement of construction labour loyalty on construction sites remains a largely neglected measure for reducing their turnover and improving their productivity. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively investigate the managerial drivers of labour loyalty, including macro-environment of the project host country, organizational living environment, job system, rewards, and communication, and to explore the significance of satisfaction as a mediating variable in the relationship between the managerial drivers and construction labour loyalty. First, hypotheses on the relationships between construction labour loyalty, satisfaction and the five managerial drivers were proposed. Second, structural equation modelling was adopted to test these hypotheses. Finally, the results demonstrated two types of influence paths: (1) macro-environment, job system and communication have significantly direct effects on construction labour loyalty, (2) mediated by satisfaction, organizational living environment and rewards offer positive indirect effects on construction labour loyalty. The first type of path serves as a long-term strategic orientation for improving labour loyalty. The second type of path is a tactic for short-term goals of labour loyalty enhancement. The research results can contribute to the body of knowledge of human resource management and the practice of enhancing labour productivity through improving construction labour loyalty in the context of international construction projects.

Sustainable development has been commonly identified as a vital target in the construction industry. Studies have examined different management strategies and procedures to promote resource utilization efficiency, while the human factors in sustainable construction have received far less attention. This paper investigates the influence of Project Citizenship Behavior (PCB) on project performance in the sustainable construction context. After introducing the concept of “relationship sustainability,” a moderating model is established. Data are collected from 152 experienced construction project managers in China. The results show positive relationships between most dimensions of Project Citizenship Behavior and construction sustainability performance, in spite of the negative effect of taking charge on relationship sustainability. Moreover, the degree of complexity of projects acts as a moderator in the relationship between Project Citizenship Behavior and construction sustainability performance. This paper endeavors to enrich the knowledge of sustainable construction by regarding human behavioral factors as important resources and explaining their effect on project sustainability, thus shedding light on the theory of sustainable construction by extending it to the micro-level analysis, as well as offering guidelines about how to raise the sustainability level of construction projects.
