Effects of Lysine Intake during Middle to Late Gestation (Day 30 to 110) on Reproductive Performance, Colostrum Composition, Blood Metabolites and Hormones of Multiparous Sows

Abstract: Lysine intake during gestation has a major impact on subsequent reproductive performance. The objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of lysine intake from mid-gestation until farrowing on the reproductive performance of multiparous sows. On day 30 of gestation, 200 Landrace×Large White sows were randomly assigned to one of four groups based on body weight and parity (n = 50). The gestation diets contained 0.46, 0.56, 0.65 or 0.74% lysine. Increasing dietary lysine concentration improved sow b… Show more

“…In the present study, DT or ST of dietary threonine intake resulted in lower serum prolactin on day 110 of gestation. This observation is consistent with reports that pregnant sows consuming adequate lysine had higher serum prolactin concentrations compared with sows fed deficient lysine (Shi, Shi, Li, Li, & Wang, ; Zhang et al., ). In swine, lactogenesis is initiated by a prepartum peak of prolactin which is induced by a drop in progesterone concentration (Farmer, Robert, & Rushen, ).…”

“…The reproductive performance of sows can be significantly influenced by inadequate nutritional intake (Prunier & Quesnel, ). Formulation of the gestation diet for primiparous gilts should take into consideration sufficient nutrient supply for optimal foetal development, but also for the young sows to reach their mature body size (Zhang et al., ). Under commercial conditions, the sows are restricted fed during gestation to avoid extra body weight gain.…”

“…Teóricamente el aumento de las concentraciones de BHB después del parto, puede deberse a que la cerda pasa de un metabolismo anabólico de la gestación a un metabolismo catabólico en la lactancia, presentándose lipólisis de la grasa corporal de reserva para la producción de calostro y leche (15). Las cerdas en esta situación fisiológica están propensas a la acumulación de cuerpos cetónicos en el plasma, no obstante y posiblemente por el efecto de las dietas esto no fue observado.…”
