Effects of Losartan on the Sexual Behavior of Male Rats

Abstract: Many commonly used antihypertensive drugs such as diuretics and beta-blockers can interfere with sexual function in both sexes, causing loss of libido, impairment of erectile function and ejaculation in men, and delay or prevent orgasm in women. Newly developed antihypertensive drugs should ideally not interfere with the patients’ quality of life including sexual function. This study examined the effects of losartan, a nonpeptide, specific antagonist for type I angiotensin II receptors, on the male sexual beha… Show more

“…Blockade of both Ang II receptor subtypes in the medial amygdala does not alter sexual behavior in female rats [31]. The Ang II receptor blockers in hypertension also do not show any alterations of sexual behavior in male rats [56]. In contrast, blockade of AT 1 receptors in a mouse model of type II diabetes improves sexual behavior [57].…”

“…In addition to clinical evidence, we and others have examined, experimentally, the effects of different antihypertensive agents on sexual responses [55,[107][108][109]. For example, we showed for the first time that in old, hypertensive rats with erectile dysfunction, brief aggressive treatment with an ACE inhibitor decreased structurally-based vascular resistance (↑ lumen diameter) in the penile vasculature [108,110] and improved erectile function [108].…”

“…Losartan protects the structural changes in vessels and cavernous spaces of the erectile tissue caused by arterial hypertension, 16 and improves the erectile function. 17 Losartan can also restore the erectile capacity in normotension aged rats. 18 Losartan improves erectile function of hypertensive men with ED and increases the satisfaction and frequency of sexual activity.…”
