Typically, in handling worn parts, to avoid extra expenditure, car manufacturers will send them to the scrap yard. Reconstruction of the worn area via additive manufacturing is now an option. Unfortunately, heat will reduce the deposited material’s properties, like wear resistance. In this study, the effect of a cold deformation via cold forging on the tribological performance of aluminium alloy wire ER 5356 fabricated by wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) will be investigated. The cold forging process was conducted at room temperature on an open die transverse to the direction of the deposited weld. Comparisons were made between unforged and forged specimens at dry and wet sliding conditions at varied speeds and loads applied. Based on the results, it was observed that forged specimens exhibit a lower specific wear rate than unforged specimens for both conditions. The coefficient of friction (COF) in dry sliding decreases as the specific wear rate increases. However, comparatively, COF at wet sliding is lower for both unforged and forged samples. As a conclusion, the cold forging enhances the tribological performance by lowering the specific wear rate and COF.

Biodiesel has become increasingly common and significant alternative to traditional petroleum fuel in recent years. However, biodiesel has some adverse effects to the engine components materials. Therefore, in this study, wear simulation of automotive engine component materials was done using computational fluid dynamics approach to develop wear mechanism map. A pin-on-disc configuration was considered as a simulation model of wear under biodiesel using three different types of steel materials whereby load was applied from pin to disc during the simulation process. The relationship between wear rate, applied load and sliding velocity were simulated and discussed followed by a wear mechanism map. The corrosive and abrasive wear mixture were dominated for stainless steel, carbon steel and low-alloy steel. Stainless steel showed more wear-resistant behavior than other materials under biodiesel exposure. The individual wear map generated for the individual material is also discussed in the context of the wear mechanisms observed under biodiesel contact.

In surface engineering, new coatings and deposition techniques for decreasing wear have been proposed. However, the tribological behaviors of these coatings under lubricated sliding with biodegradable oils are unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate the tribological behaviors of two hydraulic biodegradable oils, namely hydraulic environmental ester oil synthetic (HEES) and hydraulic oil environmental polyalphaolefin (HEPR), with hydraulic mineral oil (HLP), using a pin-on-disk tribometer. In the sliding tests, a Cu-35Zn sphere against a flat surface is coated with WC-10Co4Cr alloy using a HVOF thermal spray. The Stribeck curve was used to evaluate the performances of the lubricants. The coefficient of friction, the contact pressure, and the film thickness were determined. In addition, the coefficient of wear of the sphere was evaluated, and the oil with the lowest value was identified, which was HEPR in this case. In long-term tests, HEPR was affected by the stick-slip phenomenon, which increased the coefficients of friction and wear. Furthermore, the mechanism of adhesion of the sphere on the disk was more evident with the use of HEES compared to HLP. The highest concentrations of Zn and P and the pressure-viscosity coefficient value, which was detected in the mineral oil, caused friction reduction and lower damage to the surfaces. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the tribological conditions of synthetic bio-lubricants for applications in hydraulic systems.
