“…This is not surprising because the magnitude of PHA response has been shown to be particularly sensitive to short-term variation in individual nutritional state (review in Alonzo-Alvarez and Tella 2001; Lifjeld et al 2002) and also the magnitude of humoral immune response to foreign erythrocytes has been shown to depend on external conditions (e.g. Moore and Siopes 2000).…”

“…Supplementation with dietary melatonin has provided the strongest physiological support to date. For example, in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) immune function was significantly lowered when birds were kept under constant illumination compared with birds maintained on either short-(8 h light) or long-day (16 h light) cycles, but supplementation with melatonin in the drinking water provided a positive dose-dependent immune-enhancing effect [81]. Using a comparable experimental design Vinogradova and Anisimov [82] found that melatonin provided in the drinking water was able to reduce the severity of a number of age-related metabolic disorders in rats exposed to constant illumination.…”

“…From an immune standpoint, studies tracking immune function over the annual cycle show no general pattern of either immunoenhancement or attenuation during short days (reviewed in Hasselquist 2007). Furthermore, experimental studies linking melatonin and immune function via melatonin implants or photoperiodic manipulation have produced incongruent results in terms of melatonin-linked immunoenhancement (Giannessi et al 1992;Bentley et al 1998;Moore and Siopes 2000;Majewski et al 2005). Finally, no combined melatonin and immune function dataset is available for a single avian species.…”
