To reduce the occurrence of stickers and longitudinal cracks during continuous casting (CC) of peritectic steel, herein, the use of a mold slag with high basicity and adequate lubrication is proposed. Laboratory results indicate that the mold slag with a basicity of 1.75 and 2.3 wt% Li2O content exhibits a lower break and melting temperatures and relatively fast crystallization rate. The proposed mold slag can rapidly induce crystallization to control the heat flux, and the residual flux after crystallization and formation of the solid slag still exhibits excellent lubrication on the initial shell. Thus, coordination control of heat transfer and lubrication during CC of peritectic steel can be achieved. Industrial trials obtain satisfactory results, the application of the designed mold slag reduces the occurrence of stickers, and longitudinal cracks are reduced at the initial stage of one sequence casting.

Structural Analysis Methods for Characterizing Multicomponent Melts and Glasses Processed at High Temperatures

Recent structural-analysis research was reviewed for characterizing multicomponent melts and glasses processed at high temperatures. Multicomponent melts and glasses are often formed in slags during pyrometallurgical processing and the vitrification of highly radioactive wastes from nuclear power plants. Melt and glass physical properties were interpreted based on structural analyses using different methods. For example, the viscosities of different molten-silicate compositions were explained based on Raman and magic-angle-spinning magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) spectra. In addition, the thermal conductivities of multicomponent vitrified glasses were examined based on the structures elucidated using MAS NMR spectroscopy. X-ray absorption spectroscopy, which provides information about element chemical states, is used to analyze the local structure around specific elements in both melts and glasses. These studies show that structural analysis methods provide important information for designing and controlling melts and glasses processed at high temperatures. The structures characterized using different analysis methods were presented to elucidate the physical properties of multicomponent melts and glasses processed at high temperatures and propose prospects and directions for further research of process-oriented methods.

Development of the advanced mold flux is always mandatory to enhance both the quality and productivity of continuous casting of steels. Especially, the increasing demands for high alloy steels production and high speed casting reveals serious contradiction between two principal functions of mold flux: lubrication and controlling heat transfer. In order to overcome this problematic needs, some innovative research activities are being carried out. MAE (Mixed Alkali Effect) has been examined in alumino-borosilicate-based mold system to stabilize alkali cation and aluminum association, which enables chemically stable glassy mold flux film during casting of high alloy steels. Non-Newtonian mold fluxes could be developed by addition of Si3N4 or SiC due to the increase of stiffness of polymeric structure, which would be beneficial to satisfy the contradictory requirements of viscosity at mold top surface and mold wall. Some innovative ideas for controlling mold heat transfer without deteriorating the lubrication have been examined by dispersion of nano-size metallic particles and by modification of prenucleation motif. All these trials are closely related with glass science and engineering. Therefore, it should be highly beneficial to enhance the collaborative research activities between glass and metallurgy society for further development of advanced functional mold flux systems.
