Effects of land use on fish assemblages in Patagonian low order streams

Abstract: -We assessed the effects of land use on the structure of stream fish assemblages in Northwest Patagonia, Argentina. To this end, a total of 18 sites distributed in 15 streams were sampled during the low water period. At each site, 26 regional and local scale variables were used to describe the environmental conditions. The macroinvertebrate density, and the composition and abundance of fish were then recorded. Statistical associations between local assemblage structures and environmental variables were quantif… Show more

“…The streams considered in this study were dominated by the exotic O. mykiss in terms of both density and biomass, whereas the native H. macraei was scarcely represented in the samples, similar to findings by Di Prinzio et al (2009). Hatcheria macraei is a rheophilic and negatively phototactic catfish (Menni, 2004) which inhabits fast flowing, clear, cold and well-oxygenated waters (Ringuelet 1975).…”

“…Both Rosario lake and Nant y Fall river are used for sport fishing since they are inhabited by the native pejerrey, Odonthestes hatchery (Eigenmann) and the exotic rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum). The indigenous small benthic catfish, Hatcheria macraei (Girard) is also present in the river (Di Prinzio et al 2009). …”
