Effects of land-use changes on landslides in a landslide-prone area (Ardesen, Rize, NE Turkey)

Abstract: Various natural hazards such as landslides, avalanches, floods and debris flows can result in enormous property damages and human casualties in Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey. Mountainous topographic character and high frequency of heavy rain are the main factors for landslide occurrence in Ardesen, Rize. For this reason, the main target of the present study is to evaluate the landslide hazards using a sequence of historical aerial photographs in Ardesen (Rize), Turkey, by Photogrammetry and Geographical I… Show more

“…Detailed mapping of the study area was carried out using satellite images and multiple field surveys, to ascertain the nature of terrain and the factors influencing landsliding, that vary strongly throughout the world (Ayalew and Yamagishi 2005;Karsli et al 2009). In the Himalayan terrain, rock strength and geological structures play a major role in the landslide activity.…”

“…Land cover and land use changes are both often carry-overs from pre-historic periods that are direct and indirect consequences of human activities to obtain essential resources [2]. Thus, the information from both historic and modern time on land use and human activities along with the stability factors may vary rapidly in response to environmental changes or economical needs [3]. Land use change and climate change are interrelated, as these two processes affect each other.…”

“…Among the widely used statistical method is the logistic regression (Isik Yilmaz 2009). Many researchers have also used different techniques such as heuristic approach (Karsli et al 2009) and deterministic models (Avtar et al 2011).…”
