Effects of kinesiotaping on knee osteoarthritis: a literature review

Abstract: The purpose of this review was to determine the current evidence-base for the efficacy of kinesiotaping in patients with osteoarthritis. Searching was undertaken using MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) from 2007 to 2018. The target terms included within our search criteria were "kinesiotape," "osteoarthrites," "knee pain," "adults," and "geriatric." Current findings indicate that kinesiotaping can be considered a useful method for decreasing pain without any side … Show more

“…Eccentric contractions cause more fatigue than contraction contractions. Kinesio taping can be considered a useful method for decreasing pain without any side effects in patients with osteoarthritis ( Abolhasani et al, 2019 ). Applying horseshoe taping to the upper and lower patellar with kinesiology tape is more helpful in immediate recovery after exercise-induced quadriceps fatigue ( Son et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Taping has its impact on the skin, causing it to lift and wrinkle. As a result, blood and lymph flows are improved and harmful metabolites removed, which, in turn, contributes to a reduction of inflammation [7]. Moreover, taping improves microcirculation, reduces swelling, and improves healing of musculoskeletal injuries [7].…”

“…22,23 The physiological effects of KT have been assumed lifting the skin to increases the inter-tissue space and improves blood and lymph circulation, 20 "Gate-control of pain", and through "Neurofacilitation" on a human body system. 24 However, the current evidence regarding its effectiveness appear to be unclear and debatable in reducing pain, improving range of motion and preventing functional disability when compared to other forms of intervention in individuals with musculoskeletal disorders. 23,[25][26][27][28] Given the lack of consistency and resulted uncertainty regarding the clinical worthiness of KT in parameters of pain, range of motion, functional disability among subjects with knee OA, there is still a need for current evidence with high-quality trials in a systematic way.…”
