Effects of iron on the growth, biofilm formation and virulence of Klebsiella pneumoniae causing liver abscess

Abstract: Background: Klebsiella pneumoniae is considered as the most clinically relevant species of Enterobacteriaceae, known to cause severe infections including liver abscesses. To the best of our knowledge, iron in human body primarily gathers in liver. Further understanding of effects of iron on K. pneumoniae causing liver abscess is a promising way to elucidate the mechanism of poor prognosis of liver abscess. Results: All tested K. pneumoniae including those collected from liver abscess and other sterile sites and… Show more

“…In the competition between endophytes and pathogens, the competition for the element iron cannot be ignored. Iron is one of the important trace elements in the development of pathogens, affecting their growth, germination, and virulence 131,135 . In the wounds of fruit and vegetables, the iron content is low and endophytes can produce iron carriers to compete with pathogens.…”

“…e hemosiderin-laden parenchyma that is characteristic of TGCT is in large part the result of recurrent hemarthrosis and gives TGCT its distinct MRI characteristics [7,10,11,43]. KO, like K. pneumoniae, can promote growth and biofilm formation and enhance virulence by chelating iron [44,45] that is readily available in joints burdened by TGCT. MRI analysis is considered the most useful presurgical diagnostic modality of TGCT [7,8,46].…”
