Effects of Intravenous Administration of Interleukin-1-Beta on the Release of Prostaglandin E<sub>2</sub>, Corticotropin-Releasing Factor, and Arginine Vasopressin in Several Hypothalamic Areas of Freely Moving Rats: Estimation by Push-Pull Perfusion

Abstract: Utilizing the push-pull perfusion technique, we examined the effect of an intravenous bolus injection of recombinant human interleukin (IL)-1β on the release of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), CRF, and AVP in several hypothalamic areas of freely moving rats, simultaneously monitoring plasma ACTH levels. “…Induction of Cox-2 in vascular endothelial cells participates to the cerebral vasodilatation effect of IL-1b (Osuka et al, 1997) through accumulation of cyclic nucleotides and increase of NO production (Bonmann et al, 1997). Interleukin-1b is also a potent activator of the hypothalamo-pituitaryadrenal (HPA) axis (Schobitz et al, 1994;Besedovsky et al, 1991) through PGs and this is consistent with the strong hybridization signal for Cox-2 mRNA (Watanobe and Takebe, 1994) and Cox-2 immunoreactivity observed along the microvessels of the parvocellular PVN in the present study.
