“…These rats were mavimal1y affected by the 1 hour delay, but at the In a separate study, injections of 800 ng of 192 IgG-saporin into the hippocampi of both mature and aged rats produced similar reductions of hippocampal ChAT activity in both age groups (Bannon, Curzon, Gunther & Decker, 1996). However, only aged rats showed 192 IgG-Saporin in Neonatal Rats 12 subsequent performance deficits in the Momk water rnaze, presumably due to a pre-existing hypofunction in the aged septohippocampal systern.…”

“…(Eierger-Sweeney et al, 1994;Leanza et al, 1995;Walsh et al, 1995). In contrast, unimpaired spatial navigation using the same injection methods has also been reported (Bannon et al, 1996;Baxter, Bucci, Sobel, Williams, Goman & Gallagher, 1996;Dornan et al, 1996). One explanation for these disparate results could be that ChAT activity in the basal forebrain must be reduced below a certain threshold before manifestation ofbehavioral deficits occurs.…”

“…Some of the deficits resulting from combined EC and cholinergic lesions were found in tasks in which the cholinergic lesions alone had no significant effect (reference memory in the water maze, working memory in the radial maze, performance in the Hebb-Williams maze; see Table 4), suggesting that the increased amplitude of the deficits induced by combined lesions cannot be reduced to a simple addition of the specific effects of each lesion. Interestingly, Bannon et al (1996) found that whereas intraseptal injections of 192 IgG-saporin induced similar depletions of ChAT activity in the hippocampus of mature and aged rats, aged rats with lesions exhibited poor performance. It is not to exclude that this higher sensitivity to cholinergic lesions in aged rats might also be related to an interaction between the cholinergic lesion and existing damage in other structures.…”

“…Several groups have reported that discrete lesions of either the MS/VDB or the NB, as well as a complete lesion of the entire basal forebrain (CBF) did not impair spatial working memory as tested in standard versions of the water maze and radial arm maze tasks (Baxter et al, 1995;Pizzo et al, 2002;Vuckovich et al, 2004;Frielingsdorf et al, 2006). However, other groups using more challenging, or more sensitive tasks of spatial memory have reported deficits following MS/VDB lesions (Baxter et al, 1995;Bannon et al, 1996;Chang and Gold, 2004), NB lesions (Baxter et al, 1995) or CBF lesions (Pizzo et al, 2002;Frick et al, 2004). A prediction arising from these studies was that the cholinergic system may play a role in strategy selection, rather than spatial memory per se.…”
