Effects of Insulin Resistance and Obesity on Lipoproteins and Sensitivity to Egg Feeding

Abstract: Objective-This study was undertaken to determine if insulin resistance without and with obesity influences LDL response to dietary cholesterol and saturated fat. Methods and Results-We fed 0, 2, and 4 egg yolks per day to 197 healthy subjects in a 4-week, double-blind, randomized, crossover design. Subjects were dichotomized on body mass index (Ͻ27.5 and Ն27.5 kg/m 2 ) and insulin sensitivity (insulin-sensitivity index Ն4.2ϫ1.0 Ϫ4 and Ͻ4.2ϫ1.0 Ϫ4 min Ϫ1 U/mL), yielding insulin-sensitive (IS, nϭ65), insulinresi… Show more

“…We recruited 182 individuals (76 men/106 women) aged 32 to 75 years by advertisement, from the Greater Seattle area, to participate in a study on the effect of insulin sensitivity on the lipoprotein profile response to egg consumption [40]. Eligible subjects had to be apparently healthy with no known history of diabetes, coronary artery disease or other vascular disease.…”

“…The study cohort was comprised of 196 individuals (75 men and 121 women) from the Greater Seattle area who had been recruited by advertisement to participate in a study of the effect of insulin sensitivity on lipoprotein profile alteration after egg consumption (34). Eligible subjects had to be apparently healthy with no history of diabetes or coronary or other vascular disease.…”

“…There may be a mechanistic explanation for decreased lipid responsiveness to dietary intervention in patients with the metabolic syndrome. Studies have shown that the LDL cholesterol response to diets low in SFA [83] or to egg feeding as dietary cholesterol challenge [84] are blunted in obese, insulin-resistant subjects compared with lean, insulin-sensitive individuals. Prior studies had shown that higher BMI is associated with decreased LDL-cholesterol responses to hypolipidemic diets [85,86,87].…”
