“…However, NO x concentration in the seeded experiments was remarkably higher than in the unseeded (j NO 2 = 0.28 min −1 ) experiments, and NO x is known to suppress SOA formation . Huang et al (2013) obtained a SOA yield of approximately 0.1 when no seed particles were present and 0.2-0.4 when seed particles were present, depending on the seed particle material. It must be noted that Ng et al, 2007;Kroll et al (2007) and Huang et al (2013) carried out their experiments in dry conditions (RH 4-7 % or 15 %), while in our experiments RH was 54-79 %.…”

This may have enhanced the SOA yields, because a higher humidity is known to increase the SOA yield remarkably (Zhou et al, 2011;Keller and Burtscher, 2012).…”

“…Our group has used scanning mobility particle sizer and ALTOFMS to study the effects of inorganic seed aerosols on the growth and chemical composition of SOA formed from OH-initiated oxidation of toluene. Our results revealed that inorganic seed aerosols would promote growth rates of SOA formation at the start of the reaction and inhibits its formation rate with prolonging the reaction time, while the products of SOA is affected by inorganic seed aerosol through multiphase reaction (Huang et al 2013a). Recently, Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) algorithm has been developed by our group to classify the mass spectra of large numbers of particles obtained by ALTOFMS (Huang et al 2013b).…”

“…The mass spectra of these 10 clusters are different from those observed in our previously aged 135-TMB SOA study without seed aerosol [26], indicating that new particulate products were formed. The first class I has the only peak of m/z 18, which is representative of ammonium ion (NH 4 + ) [32,33]. The patterns of classes II and III resemble the mass spectra of methylglyxoal and 2-methyl-4-oxo-2-pentenal, which were detected in our previous photooxidation experiment of 135-TMB [26].…”
