Effects of induced hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism on growth and reproductive performance of Brahman heifers.

Abstract: Prepubertal Brahman heifers (BW = 302 +/- 7.5 kg, body condition score [BCS] = 5.4 +/- .2, age = 498 +/- 3.4 d: SEM) were used to study the effects of thyroid function on growth and reproduction. Seven heifers were controls (C). Seven heifers were induced to become hypothyroid by ingestion of 4 mg/kg BW of 6-n-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU). Seven heifers were induced to become hyperthyroid (T) by daily s.c. injections of triiodothyronine (T3, 1 mg/d). Treatments were administered for 84 d followed by an 84 d postt… Show more

“…Propylthiouracil had been repeatedly shown to draw this response in goats (Villar et al, 1998;2000;AlTamimi, in press-b), sheep (Al-Tamimi et al, 1998;Hernandez et al, 2003), and cattle (Thrift et al, 1999). In agreement with the previous literature, PTU administration in the current trial at 20 mg/kg BW/day is sufficient in eliciting a reversible antithyroidal reaction.…”

“…(1991) who propose plasma concentrations of T 3 vary inversely with ambient temperature, suggesting temperature is associated with the increase in serum T 3 observed in the post‐treatment period. However, temporary hyperthyroidism is a common side effect in humans who have PTU treatments terminated (LaFranchi and Mandel 1996) and has also been commonly observed in animal studies utilizing PTU (Thrift et al. 1999a, 1999b; Bollinger et al.…”

“…PTU effect is dose-dependent and reversible [17]. It was earlier proved that PTU in doses of 4 mg/kg body weight (BW), by acting on central and peripheral level, signifi cantly decreases both T 4 and T 3 in dams treated in daily fashion [18][19][20]. Doses of 1-2 mg/kg BW per day only inhibit the peripheral conversion of T 4 in T 3 [21,22].…”
