Effects of incubation temperature on the embryonic viability and hatching time in Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii)

Abstract: Background: Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) is an emerging candidate species in the Korean aquaculture domain owing to its highly valued caviar. Although the embryonic development of this species was previously described, the complete image data on the morphological differentiation of developing embryos have not been yet fully available. Further, with the viewpoint of larval production in hatchery, the effects of temperature on embryonic viability and the temporal window of hatching event have not… Show more

“…При штучному розведенні перевага надається видам з належними показниками якості ікри, наприклад, руському осетру (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) (Kim et al, 2018). В умовах фермерських господарств акцент робиться на оптимізацію факторів, специфічних для риб (наприклад, поведінка, пристосування, розмір, баланс між видами) (Hrynevych, 2019), а також умовам утримання (корм, фізико-хімічні показники води) (Chebanov & Billard, 2001;Simon, 2016;Lee et al, 2021).…”

“…We obtained the Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) used in the present study from Dinoville Sturgeon Aquafarm, Hamyang, Kyoung-nam, Republic of Korea. We injected luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analog (LHRH-a; Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis, MO, USA) into the muscles of mature female (n = 2) and male (n = 3) broodfish at dose levels of 80 μg/kg for females and 20 μg/kg for males to obtain eggs and milt (Kim et al 2018;Park 2018). We used the wet method for artificial fertilization and treated the fertilized eggs with anti-adhesive agent (Fuller's earth; Sigma-Aldrich), as described by Kim et al (Kim et al 2018).…”

“…The Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) is one of the most commercially important Acipenser species-mainly because its caviar ("Ossetra caviar") is highly prized-and is now an important candidate species in Korean aquaculture (Kim et al 2018;Park 2018). The ontogeny and general behavioral patterns of artificially produced Russian sturgeon have been described by several research groups (Dettlaff et al 1993;Chebanov and Galich 2011;Kynard et al 2002).…”

“…Thus, information about the optimal temperature range for egg incubation is essential in successful fish larvae production, protection of fish species, and for the success of chromosome manipulation, which often requires a specific temperature regime [ 9 , 10 , 16 , 17 ]. Physical (pressure and temperature) or chemical shock at an early stage of embryonic development induce polyploidization, body deformities, disturbance in growth, and increased fish mortality [ 18 , 19 ]. The cold-shock treatment of fertilized eggs induces polyploidy (triploidy, tetraploidy, etc.)…”
